Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of pesantren as a community-based Islamic educational institution and its contribution to the development of Islamic society in Indonesia. Using a literature review method, the study analyzes various secondary sources such as books, scientific articles, and national and international journals relevant to the topic. The results show that pesantren play a strategic role in shaping a generation of Muslims with noble character and broad perspectives. Pesantren not only focus on teaching religious knowledge but also instill social, cultural, and life skills in their students. In facing the challenges of modernity and globalization, pesantren are required to integrate general knowledge and technology into their curriculum without losing their Islamic identity. Efforts by pesantren to realize community-based Islamic education include balancing the relationship with Allah (hablum minallah) and the relationship with fellow humans (hablum minannas), as well as applying social values from the Qur'an as a guide for community life. Pesantren are recognized as an integral part of the national education system, capable of serving as agents of social change through community-based education.
