Publication Ethics
The Journal of Qur'an and Hadith Studies, which publishes research and scholarly articles focusing on the quality and significance of the intellectual treasures (khazanah) of the Qur'an and Hadith, asserts that Publication Ethics is the fundamental principle for building a trustworthy and respectable knowledge network. This ethical commitment involves all parties—authors, editors, the editorial board, reviewers (peer reviewers), and the publisher—and is based on academic best practices. Our commitment aims to guarantee the authenticity, academic honesty, fairness, and scientific integrity of every manuscript published.
As a venue for scientific publication specializing in the scholarship of the Qur'an and Hadith—covering 'ulum al-Qur'an and 'ulum al-hadis (Qur'anic and Hadith Sciences), classical to modern studies, integrated thought, orientalist studies, and living Qur'an/Hadith—the journal enforces strict ethical standards, in line with the intellectual and moral responsibility toward the primary sources of Islam.
A. Core Principles of Publication Ethics
1. Article Publication (Author's Duties and Manuscript Integrity)
Article publication is a crucial building block in the development of knowledge. For a journal focused on 'ulum al-Qur'an and 'ulum al-hadis, and related studies, originality and integrity in research are absolute. Authors are obligated to report research results objectively and accurately, ensure the submitted work is original, and avoid fraudulent, fabricated, or inaccurate statements. Furthermore, a submitted article must not be under review in any other journal and must not be withdrawn without formal editorial consent to prevent duplicate publication (redundancy) or self-plagiarism.
2. Publication Decisions
The journal editor holds full responsibility and final authority to decide which manuscripts will be published. This decision must be based on scientific validity, relevance, significance to readers and the academic community (experts, scholars, researchers, practitioners, lecturers, and students interested in Qur'an and Hadith studies), and its intellectual quality. The editor must be guided by editorial board policies and reviewer feedback, and is bound by legal requirements regarding defamation, copyright infringement, and plagiarism.
3. Plagiarism Screening
As part of the author's responsibility, every submitted article must be 100% free of plagiarism and other academic misconduct. To ensure this, editors must use credible plagiarism checking software (plagiarism checker). Nevertheless, the editor’s deep knowledge and experience in Qur'an and Hadith studies will also be a critical determinant in the screening process to ensure the work's originality. The editor reserves the right to reject manuscripts with a similarity index above the journal's set tolerance limit.
4. Confidentiality
The review process must be fair and objective. Therefore, the journal employs a double-blind review system. The identities of both the author and the reviewer must be removed before the manuscript is sent for review to minimize bias and subjectivity. Editors and all editorial staff must maintain the confidentiality of all information regarding submitted manuscripts, including their content, and are prohibited from using this information for personal gain or for the benefit of any third party.
5. Fair Play
Editors must evaluate manuscripts solely based on their intellectual content. In the context of a Qur'an and Hadith studies journal, which welcomes contributions from anyone (experts, lecturers, researchers, etc.), editors must be neutral and prohibited from discriminating against authors based on their race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy.
B. Special Relevance in the Context of the Qur'an and Hadith
1. Responsible Reporting of Study Results
For authors examining the Qur'an and Hadith, the Duty of Standard Reporting carries profound meaning. Articles must present interpretations or research results objectively and with steadfastness (istiqomah—e.g., in philology studies, interpretation, or sanad (chain of transmission) of Hadith), avoiding data distortion, manipulation, or excessive claims. Due to the sensitivity of this field, any inaccurate statement can be categorized as highly unethical and misleading behavior.
2. Careful Acknowledgement of Sources
Given that these studies often involve a long tradition and debates among classical and contemporary scholars, Acknowledgement of Sources is crucial. Authors are obligated to give proper credit to the works of previous scholars, intellectuals, or researchers through adequate citations and a bibliography. Failure to adequately cite when using the work or words of others (classical or modern) is unequivocally considered plagiarism.
3. Reviewer's (Peer Reviewer's) Responsibilities
Objectivity and Field Competence: Reviewers appointed to review Qur'an and Hadith articles must possess deep competence in the relevant research field (e.g., Hadith experts for Hadith manuscripts, or Tafsir experts for Qur'an manuscripts). The Standard of Objectivity requires reviewers to evaluate the strength of the argumentation, methodology, and scientific contribution of the manuscript, not to personally criticize the author or attack a specific school of thought (mazhab) or intellectual tradition adopted by the author, unless it affects the scientific integrity and methodology of the work.
Identification of Related Work: In the Acknowledgement of Sources, reviewers have the important task of identifying relevant works (including authoritative primary and secondary references in Qur'an and Hadith scholarship) that the author has not cited, in order to enrich and strengthen the manuscript's theoretical framework.
4. Ethics of Editors and Publisher
Fair Play in Study Diversity: Given that this field of study encompasses a diversity of methodologies, schools of thought, and traditional backgrounds (such as hermeneutics, thematic tafsir, or Hadith criticism), Fair Play by the editor is essential. Editors must evaluate manuscripts without regard to the author's religious affiliation or institutional background, focusing solely on the scientific integrity of the manuscript within the field of Qur'an and Hadith studies.
Corrective Action and Retraction: In accordance with the Handling of Fundamental Errors in Published Works and Retraction, the editor and publisher are committed to acting quickly and decisively if fundamental errors, data inaccuracies, or proven evidence of ethical violations (such as data fabrication or plagiarism) are found in a published article. This is necessary to maintain the truth, credibility, and sanctity of Qur'an and Hadith scholarship.
