Abstract

The presence of the Quran in the midst of a community of people who have embraced the Abrahamic religions, namely Jews and Christians, indirectly makes Muslims easily intersect with these two religions, both culture, traditions, stories to the contents of the holy book. When the Companions and Tabi'in faced the stories in the Quran, it was not uncommon for them to ask the scribes or adherents of the two other religions about it, until gradually Muslims began to love the stories and traditions of Jews and Christians. This attitude of the Companions certainly received a response from Allah and the Prophet Muhammad, which was recorded in the atsar, which led to a debate among scholars regarding the permissibility and prohibition of taking the history of the people of the book or israiliyat stories as a source of interpretation. This article tries to review the history and israiliyat stories used as a source of interpretation by raising two focuses of discussion, namely the development of israiliyat history in the course of Quran interpretation and a critical attitude to review the accepted israiliyat history. Through library research with qualitative methods, this study produces three aspects that must be reviewed when dealing with israiliyat narrations, especially stories in the Quran, namely reviewing the narrator of the story, looking at the series of sanad and the content of the matan, and complying with the limits of permissibility and prohibition in accepting israiliyat narrations.
