Artificial Intelligence Policy
Borneo Journal of Islamic Education (BJIE) supports the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in research and scholarly publishing. Its use must uphold transparency, originality, confidentiality, and academic integrity. AI may serve as an assistive tool but must not replace authors’ accountability or the independent scholarly judgment of editors and reviewers.
Use of AI by Authors
Authors may use AI applications to assist with language editing, grammar checking, translation, and improving manuscript readability. Any use of AI in data processing or analysis must be described in the Method section, including the tool’s name, version where available, purpose, procedures, and steps taken to verify its outputs.
Authors must critically review and verify all AI-assisted content, including facts, quotations, references, and interpretations of findings. AI must not be used to conceal plagiarism, fabricate references, fabricate or falsify data, manipulate findings, or misrepresent research procedures. Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the entire manuscript.
Transparency and AI Use Declaration
The use of generative AI in manuscript preparation must be disclosed in an AI Use Declaration placed before the References section. The declaration must identify the application used and explain the purpose and extent of its use. Basic spelling or grammar checks that neither generate nor substantively alter content do not require a separate declaration.
Authorship and Accountability
AI applications cannot be listed as authors or co-authors because they cannot approve publication, take responsibility for the manuscript, or fulfill the ethical obligations of authorship. The use of AI does not diminish the responsibility of any author for the submitted work.
Confidentiality and AI Use in the Editorial Process
Authors, editors, and reviewers must protect personal data, confidential information, and unpublished material. Such material must not be uploaded to AI systems without appropriate authorization and adequate safeguards to protect confidentiality.
Editors and reviewers must not delegate scholarly assessment or editorial decision-making to AI. Any use of AI to assist the editorial process must remain under human supervision, preserve manuscript confidentiality, and maintain the independence of the assessment.
Assessment of Compliance
Suspected breaches of this policy will be assessed based on relevant evidence and clarification from the authors. AI-detection results will not serve as the sole basis for determining misconduct. Depending on the findings, the journal may request revisions or additional disclosure, reject the manuscript, or take post-publication action proportionate to the nature and impact of the breach.
